ABOUT ME
I’m an award-winning freelance writer and editor. I’ve published eight books and more than 500 articles in print and online publications, and have received a baker’s dozen of awards for my writing, editing and desktop publishing (remember that term?). My articles have been published in Writer’s Digest, Cincinnati Magazine, M.D. News Magazine, and elsewhere.
My first book, a young adult nonfiction titled Artists and Writers of the Harlem Renaissance, was published by Enslow Publishers, Inc., in 2002. National Parks in Crisis: Debating the Issues (Enslow) and Communication Tools Made Easy (Kendall/Hunt) were published in 2004. Dating, Relationships, and Sexuality: What Teens Should Know (2006, Enslow) and Robert Cormier: Banned, Challenged and Censored (Enslow, 2008), Harlem Renaissance Artists and Writers (Enslow, 2013), Founders and Famous Families of Cincinnati (Clerisy Press, 2014), and University of Cincinnati College of Nursing: 125 Years of Transforming Health Care (Orange Frazer Press, 2014) round out my published books to date. I’m finally finishing my first novel (which has taken me more than 20 years to write!) about a woman’s quest for individuality in an all-women’s singing group.
In 1994, I founded “Beckman Communications,” through which I provide editing and writing services for individuals, educational institutions and businesses.
My bachelor’s degrees are in geology and natural science/technical communications from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and the University of Cincinnati, respectively. I have a master’s degree in English—with a concentration in editing and publishing—and a graduate certificate in professional writing from UC.
I taught college students “Writing for Business” and “Scientific and Technical Writing” at UC from 1999 until 2004. Also from 1999 until 2004, I taught “Strength Through Cultural Diversity” at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Now I get my teaching kicks by teaching adult learners through my many workshops each year for writers who wish to get published, from a few hours in length to weekend-long retreats. I also teach writing classes for Communiversity at the University of Cincinnati.
I have a husband, three sons, a dog and a cat, but I won’t be talking about them here (much to their relief). In my distant past, I worked for the National Park Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Veterans’ Administration. I also hold a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do and am a rabid (I’m sure I meant avid) member of Cincinnati’s May Festival Chorus, the longest continuous choral tradition in the Western Hemisphere.

ABOUT MY BLOG
Here (I hope) you will find a treasure trove of nuggets about writing, reading and reaching your goals.
Henry James once wrote to his nephew, “Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!” That’s how I have approached my life and my work. As a result, I feel that I have lots of information that I am eager to share with others. My family says that I’m a fountain of trivial knowledge.
Either way you look at it, it’s here for the taking.
Or buying.
This page has the following sub pages.
